Becoming Mrs Robertson: Our incredible 1st anniversary trip
It takes a lot to top your wedding day. It’s the most perfect and dreamy day of your lives and is followed by your first journey as husband and wife; your honeymoon. We never thought we would be able to come close to topping that when we planned to go on holiday to celebrate our first wedding anniversary. How wrong were we!
Yesterday, we returned from a trip where we made more memories which will last a lifetime. We marked our first year of marriage with a trip to the Monaco Grand Prix – the most incredible experience ever!
We travelled with Supreme Breaks (www.supremebreaks.co.uk) for our five-night trip, flying from Stansted Airport to Genoa, Italy. The package included a stay at the 4* Grand Hotel Diana Majestic (www.dianamajestic.com) on the Italian Riviera, plus tickets to qualifying and race days at Monaco.
Mr Robertson and I watch every Grand Prix together at home and each year have vowed to take the trip to Monaco some time to watch the race.
After a day relaxing by the pool at the hotel, we set off on the coach trip – included in our holiday package – to Monaco for practice three and qualifying. Our guide from Supreme Breaks runs the trip every year and so was able to give invaluable advice on where to stand and where to get reasonably priced food and drinks. Day one was a scorcher and we set up camp by Monaco palace to watch over 60% of the track, where we got the first glimpse of the drivers and cars we watch on telly at home!
After our first taster of F1, we were excited for race day itself, the next day. Not for the faint hearted, it was a long and exhausting day – standing glued to our front row viewing spot from 8.30am, watching the Porsche Cup and Renault 3.5 races before the main event, finishing at 4pm. Having met lots of other F1 fans on the same trip, the atmosphere from not only Monaco as a whole, but our camp just made the weekend even more special.
As if the racing was not electric enough, our evening in Monaco following the race was just unbelievable. We were able to walk the famous racing track, around the streets of Monaco – including Casino Square and along the harbour – and even met Eddie Jordan and former Red Bull driver Mark Webber enjoying the festivities (not to mention the Ferraris and Lamborghinis we saw!). Come nightfall and the track was turned into a venue Ibiza or Magaluf would be proud of, with sport fans letting their hair down and partying on the track where the likes of Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button had been racing just hours earlier. The multi-million pound yachts – more like mini towns – also came alive, with strobe lighting and DJs pumping out the party music.
After the most amazing two days in Monaco, we were thankful for another day relaxing at our hotel, where we enjoyed authentic Italian pizza and pasta from the beach bar before a gala dinner with Team Monaco to bring a dream holiday to a close.
There were other couples on the trip who thoroughly enjoyed the experience, even if the wife was not an F1 fan. You can’t help but be impressed and blown away by the Monaco F1 experience and I would highly recommend it as a special trip with your loved one.
