Shocking statistics by UK loan broker Freedom Finance show the number of people applying for wedding loans is on the rise. Between 2013 and 2015, UK couples applied for £151m in loans! In the first two months of this year, the company recorded £8.6m applications alone.
I realise weddings generally cost a fortune, but starting married life with a stressful debt hanging over your heads cannot be conducive to a happy home. We only spent seven months planning our big day, but we both worked super hard in that time to earn the money we needed as we went along, ensuring we started our new chapter with zero wedding debt. These days, it’s also commonplace to ask guests to gift money towards a honeymoon and that’s how we paid for our luxury trip to Turkey.
But, there are other ways to cut the cost of your dream wedding.
Paula Gorry of Stampin’Up!demonstrates how there’s money to be saved by getting creative, making your own invitations, thank you cards, bunting and table centre pieces.
Although I was always going to have my dream wedding, no matter the cost, I wasn’t willing to blow money on things which weren’t important to either of us. Save the Dates, for example, were not something we spent any time considering. A simple text to our nearest and dearest had our wedding date secured in the important diaries. But, it turns out, there is a middle ground, with Paperless Wedding (www.paperlesswedding.co.uk) offering online save the dates – simple AND eco-friendly!

The modern day bride and groom have already kitted out their home with toasters, bed linen and towels. So, when it comes to the traditional gift list, there isn’t much you want or need. Ok, you could replace and update, but surely there’s a better way of letting your friends and relatives kick-start your married life. We asked our wedding guests for money towards our honeymoon and that is more and more becoming the gift of choice for the couples who already have it all.

I’m thrilled to announce details of my latest wonderful competition! To celebrate six months since the launch of A Real Bride’s Guide, I’ve put together the most exciting prize yet – a sexy boudoir makeover and photo shoot, worth more than £240!
In this day of digital photos and camera phones, newly weds end up with more images of their wedding day than ever before. Most guests snap away throughout the day and, in some cases, capture special moments even the professionals don’t see.
Ever fancied ripping up the wedding rule book and shocking with brightly coloured shoes and show-stopping accessories to go with your big white dress? Some are brave enough to step away from tradition and add heaps of fun to their actual wedding day, but most push the thought out of their mind and stick to what everyone expects.
Albelli (www.albelli.co.uk) is all about celebrating life’s special moments by creating photo books to be treasured for years to come. In just a few simple steps, your digital photos and stories can be brought to life in a personalised photo book.
We used Albelli – rated four out of five by Channel 5’s The Gadget Show – in the run-up to and since our wedding. Our guestbook was created on the website and enabled us to fill it with photos of every one of our guests, leaving space for them to write their messages to us on the day. Since the wedding, we have also compiled a stunning photo book of our honeymoon photos. What precious keepsakes we now have!
Our next project is to create a photo book featuring snapshots of our big day taken by guests. And, thanks to this wonderful discount, you can easily do the same!
For all new customers joining Albelli from A Real Bride’s Guide, there’s £15 off your pre-designed wedding photo book! The landscape books have been professionally designed and yet still allow you to tweak the look to suit your taste. You can add text, too!
Simply visit www.albelli.co.uk and enter GIFT at the checkout to claim your £15 discount!
