Getaway: Our romantic night at Woodfarm Barns
I’m a real romantic and I love precious times spent with my husband (I would imagine you’ve worked that out already!).
So, when we were invited to spend a night away at a luxury cottage made for two, I was beyond excited. Woodfarm Barns (www.woodfarmbarns.com) are a collection of the most beautiful mini cottages built in the grounds of the owner’s farmhouse in the Suffolk countryside. After research told him cottages are most often hired by couples looking for a romantic getaway, owner Carl Scott made it his mission to offer just that.
If I told you our stay at Woodfarm – in Alde Barn Cottage – made us immediately take to Rightmove wanting to find our own holiday bolthole in the country, you’ll know Carl has got his business spot-on. A complete home from home, the cottages are kitted out with everything you need to enable you to lock yourselves away from the hectic world outside and just enjoy being together.
And with stable doors, Range cooker, Belfast sink, log burning fire, vaulted ceilings, exposed oak beams and a cosy bedroom on the mezzanine floor, you are in no doubt of the countryside setting around you. Each cottage even has its own little private garden complete with BBQ and bistro dining table and chairs, a delight in the summer I’m sure.
A delicious breakfast basket was waiting for us when we arrived, with enough food to supply us with lunch, too, giving us another reason to not have to leave. With the weather cold and wet outside, we whiled away the hours snuggled up on the squishy sofa together in front of the telly, relaxing and chatting and just enjoying being still and under no time pressures from life.
We did nip out for an early evening dinner – grabbing a delicious, typical pub grub meal at Carl’s favourite, The Four Horseshoes in nearby Eye (www.thefourhorseshoes.net) – but couldn’t wait to get back to our super cosy cottage. Now, don’t laugh, but the best bit of our stay was discovering a puzzle in the sideboard…having taken a bottle of Pimm’s along with us, we smile at the fact we enjoyed an evening of pjs, Pimm’s and a puzzle – and we could not have been happier!
If you and your loved one are up for a slightly more active trip away than us, the barns do come with their very own bicycle made for two (!) and you are supplied with a folder with endless suggestions for local walks or interesting day trips. Dogs are also welcome at Woodfarm.
A week or two before our stay, all five of the holiday cottage barns were taken over by a hen party. How brilliant to find a venue where the hen and her friends can also kick back and relax together to celebrate upcoming nuptials.
I also can’t think of a more romantic place to propose to your other half, enjoy your first trip as man and wife or to celebrate an anniversary. We will certainly be returning to Woodfarm Barns, the only problem being which of the unique cottages to pick next.
Huge thanks to Carl for our dreamy trip away.
