Hen: A tame (or not so tame…) hen party at Scrumptious Tearooms

Not all of us want a drunken, wild hen night ahead of our big day. At the age of 34, I certainly had had my fill of boozy hen weekends in Brighton, Dublin and Bournemouth and wanted something different. Don’t get me wrong, I have the most hilarious memories of all of those girlie weekends, but the novelty of getting drunk and disorderly and staggering from nightclub to nightclub had completely worn off for me. I will tell more about my wonderful hen parties (yes, I had several…) another time…

I guess I’m not the only one who loves the idea of doing something different for their hen celebrations. Even those wanting the full-on wild weekend away with the girls will no doubt want to find something a little more tame to do with the mums, aunts and even nans.

At Scrumptious Tearooms (www.scrumptioustearooms.co.uk), in Great Dunmow, Essex, every member of your group is sure to have a great time. Tucked away upstairs in the 1930s themed tea shop is the drawing room where you can have your own private party. From afternoon high tea to a night-time dinner party, owner Jane – whose backgrounds in catering and interior design collide in this stunning room – is willing and able to cater to whatever ideas you have.

I popped along with my mum to try out the high tea. Selecting in advance from three menu options, we enjoyed cucumber, egg and tomato and cheese and pickle finger sandwiches, the must-have homemade scones, jam and clotted cream and the homemade cake and biscuit of the day. Pretending to be good, we also polished off the small portion of fresh fruit and, of course, found room for a cuppa and a hot chocolate. In the background, music from a bygone era played softly while we were treated to the most relaxing, special time amidst the mismatching tables and chairs and candle sticks.

Jane came up to say hello and told us of a recent evening hen party – which combined the private, homely surroundings with a touch of classic “hen party”, with party games and novelty accessories. Not keen on hitting the clubs or staying up til all hours, this would be the most wonderful hen party! What better way to head into married life than to spend an afternoon or evening sat around with your closest girls, having a giggle and eating incredible food?

Scrumptious Tearooms will open up their drawing room for any party with more than ten paying guests at no extra price for hen parties, birthday parties or any other occasion. Their next big event is Valentine’s Day where they will be turning their classic afternoon tea into a wonderfully romantic candle lit occasion. I think I may well take Mr Robertson there for a treat…

Huge thanks to Scrumptious for also naming A Real Bride’s Guide as their website of the month on their newsletter!

What have you got planned for your hen celebrations, or what did you do? Would love to hear below…
