Romantic treats for Valentine’s Day
I’m a big fan of Valentine’s Day. In fact, you’ve probably already worked out, I’m a fan of any occasion! But, one that involves me, my husband and a bit of romance is always going to make me happy.
As with everything we do, we don’t like to follow the norm and just book a meal out on February 14. We like to find something just a touch different to do – that may even mean dining out on an alternative day that week and then indulging in an intimate meal for two at home on the day of love itself. It doesn’t need to be elaborate or expensive, but it does have to be special.
If you’re looking for inspiration to make your Valentine’s Day go with a bang, take a look at these ideas I’ve come across…
Six-course meal at Sunborn London
I’ve had my eye on this place for a long time and finally Mr Robertson and I are getting to spend a night there this Valentine’s Day! As I’ve mentioned, though, we will be heading to the superyacht hotel a couple of days before the big day and so won’t be taking advantage of the special six-course meal they have lined up for Valentine’s.
The dinner will be held in the Land’s End restaurant and couples can opt to spend the night in a Yacht Executive Room.
There are also romance packages available with chocolates, rose petals or champagne awaiting your arrival!
I’ll be writing about our trip later in the month…
Valentine’s Day dining at Sopwell House, St Albans
The opportunities are endless here, it seems. The Georgian manor house boasts two restaurants, cocktail lounge and conservatory bar set among 12 acres of beautiful gardens.
An exclusive menu has been crafted for The Brasserie at Sopwell House for Valentine’s Day. Dishes on offer include tempura of tiger prawns with gazpacho shots; roast barbary duck breast, sweet potato puree, bok choy, sweet chilli jam; and chocolate pot, salted caramel pearls and passion fruit sorbet. Sounds lush!
In The Restaurant, guests can enjoy a five-course tasting menu after being welcomed with a glass of Taittinger Rose Champagne and canapes, plus a box of handmade chocolates to take home.
Or, if afternoon tea is more your thing (we love a bit of afternoon tea!), Sopwell House also has that on offer for couples with plenty of red and pink treats as a nod to the day of romance.
Tips for Valentine’s Day cocktails from Bohemia Bar, Jersey
If, like us, you like to stay within the privacy of your own home for Valentine’s Day, why not jazz it up with some homemade cocktails.
The mixologists at Bohemia Restaurant and Bar in Jersey have revealed their top tips for creating homemade refreshments to impress.
Tip 1 – Glasses Galore
If you’re out to impress, it’s worth investing in good quality glasses to add a touch of class and elegance to your homemade beverage. Think of it as an extra Valentine’s Day present! If you opt for a stemmed glass, you could also tie a pretty ribbon or flower stem around the base.
Tip 2 – Shaken vs Stirred
As a general rule, any drink which contains only alcohol should be stirred, while any drink which contains a mixer should be shaken.
Tip 3 – Ice Ice Baby
A little-known tip is to boil water before pouring it into your ice tray as it means no bubbles will form while your ice cubes freeze.
Tip 4 – Sweet and Sour
The perfect formula for achieving the sweet and sour balance is 2:1:1. That’s two parts alcohol, one part sour and one part sweet. Use sour ingredients such as lemon or lime juice; and a sweet ingredient, such as simple syrup or triple sec.
Tip 5 – Make a big batch
If your Valentine is a fan of straight-spirit cocktails, why not create a batch of your drink ahead of time. You can then chill it in the fridge in an empty wine bottle and pour individual drinks when you’re ready.
Tip 6 – Garnish
A garnish is more than just pretty decoration— it’s often what brings the whole drink together and is worth doing well! Green garnishes look wonderful with clear drinks, and can even be added to ice for an extra wow-factor.
