Romantic treats for Valentine’s Day

I’m a big fan of Valentine’s Day. In fact, you’ve probably already worked out, I’m a fan of any occasion! But, one that involves me, my husband and a bit of romance is always going to make me happy.

Sopwell House

As with everything we do, we don’t like to follow the norm and just book a meal out on February 14. We like to find something just a touch different to do – that may even mean dining out on an alternative day that week and then indulging in an intimate meal for two at home on the day of love itself. It doesn’t need to be elaborate or expensive, but it does have to be special.

If you’re looking for inspiration to make your Valentine’s Day go with a bang, take a look at these ideas I’ve come across…

Venue: Finding everything you need at Ashford International Hotel

When Mr Robertson and I were invited to spend a night at Ashford International Hotel, I must admit we were not expecting anything glamorous. Thinking the location would be the selling point – a short drive from the Eurostar at Ashford International station – we went along with open minds but low expectations.

Well, you know that old saying don’t judge a book by its cover, that came to mind when we found out what is behind the less than inspiring name.

Because, the hotel, regardless of its name, literally offers brides and grooms everything they could wish for for their big day. Want a small, intimate wedding? The Courtyard Suite and the Garden Suite are ideal as they host just 50 people each for a wedding breakfast.

Drinks: Cocktails and cider, anyone?

I’m not a big drinker, but am partial to a cocktail or a nice cold cider on a special occasion. So, with an inbox full of emails about the latest developments in this area of the booze market, I had to share.

Don’t panic if you’re on a strict weight management plan for your big day, as one even states it’s low in calories and full of real fruit juice – what’s not to like!

Whether you’re stocking up for your hen or stag parties, looking for somewhere to celebrate or want a signature cocktail for your big day, check these out for inspiration…

The first live This Morning wedding – we were there!

Wow. There is no other word, but wow. To say yesterday’s first ever live wedding on ITV’s This Morning was incredible would be an understatement.

Our dear friends Annie and Gareth were the lucky pair to be chosen to get wed in front of the nation aboard the HQS Wellingon on the Thames, just across the water from the television studios.

Getaway: A romantic break at The Angel Hotel

It’s been a couple of months since the husband and I have packed a bag and headed off for a romantic break. So, when the opportunity for a road trip to Bury St Edmunds and a stay at The Angel Hotel came up, we were there like a shot.

I had spotted this pretty, ivy clad hotel when I visited the Suffolk town for their wonderful Christmas market back in December and had made a mental note to have a stay there sometime. It proved to be the most ideal spot to enjoy a romantic, relaxing getaway, with everything on the doorstep we could need, yet with a calm and peaceful environment to unwind in and just be together. We adore our home, but the fact I missed our Contemporary Suite when we left says it all. And that copper bath, wow.

Venue: Glamour on the cobbled streets of Rye

You may recall, recently mum and I visited Sussex to check out a couple of wedding venues to tell you about. The first was a beautiful seaside themed hotel right on the beach of Camber Sands. Our next stop was a complete contrast and stunning in a different way.

Venue: Weddings by the sea at The Alexandra

I’ve written before on the blog about the possibility of having that destination wedding without leaving the UK. And I’ve struck upon what looks to be another stunning option. The Alexandra (www.hotelalexandra.co.uk) sits perched on a cliff-top overlooking the harbour and Lyme Bay at Lyme Regis.

Get-away: Luxury minimoon in Devon

There’s nothing better than those first few days after you’ve said your vows and become husband and wife. If you’re lucky enough to go straight away on honeymoon, you’ll find yourselves floating around on your own little cloud. More and more, couples are delaying their honeymoons, though, maybe to choose a better time of year to visit their country of choice or to give them time to save. To keep the wedding thrill going in the meantime, a perfect idea is to head off on a minimoon – a short, more local break away.

And I’ve come across what looks like the ideal place to start your married life in luxury. Dart Marina Hotel & Spa (www.dartmarina.com) offers a stylish home on the banks of the River Dart, in Devon. Number One gives couples the option to celebrate in luxurious surroundings, relaxing on a private terrace on the riverside.

Venue: A UK beach wedding at The Gallivant

Torn between the desire for a beach wedding and the want to have all of your family and friends with you? I have found the solution! The Gallivant (www.the gallivant.co.uk) sits across the road from the stunning sand dunes of Camber Sands beach in East Sussex. Inspired by the coastal retreats of California, The Gallivant not only has the seaside location, but is also the most incredible wedding venue you could wish for.

My mum and I went for a visit and were blown away by what we found. In the weeks leading up to our trip, my mum had been swooning over images online of the venue, with its New England decor and restful haven feel. The reality lived up to expectations and we enjoyed the most relaxing 24-hour “holiday”.

Becoming Mrs Robertson: Our 2nd anniversary in Tuscany

As we all melt in the UK heatwave, my thoughts are taken straight back to this time last month when we celebrated our second wedding anniversary in the beautiful Tuscan sunshine. Italy is a place I’ve long been keen to explore, with a list as long as my arm of parts of the beautiful country I want to visit. So, our wedding anniversary seemed the ideal time to take our first trip.
