Shocking statistics by UK loan broker Freedom Finance show the number of people applying for wedding loans is on the rise. Between 2013 and 2015, UK couples applied for £151m in loans! In the first two months of this year, the company recorded £8.6m applications alone.
I realise weddings generally cost a fortune, but starting married life with a stressful debt hanging over your heads cannot be conducive to a happy home. We only spent seven months planning our big day, but we both worked super hard in that time to earn the money we needed as we went along, ensuring we started our new chapter with zero wedding debt. These days, it’s also commonplace to ask guests to gift money towards a honeymoon and that’s how we paid for our luxury trip to Turkey.
But, there are other ways to cut the cost of your dream wedding.
Paula Gorry of Stampin’Up!demonstrates how there’s money to be saved by getting creative, making your own invitations, thank you cards, bunting and table centre pieces.
As soon as Christmas festivities are over with, my thoughts turn to the first romantic date in the calendar…Valentine’s Day. I love any excuse to turn on the romance and spend some lovey-dovey time with Mr Robertson. Although we don’t tend to splash out on expensive gifts at this time of year, we love finding more thoughtful, meaningful presents which are special to us and our relationship. And, of course, who doesn’t enjoy being taken out or whisked away at any time of year!
Stuck for ideas this year? Worry not as here’s a round-up of a few of my favourite finds this Valentine’s… » Read more
Today is a super special day for my precious mum and stepdad.
Twenty-five years ago today, they vowed to love and care for each other, no matter what life had in store for them.
My stepdad is in care with Alzheimer’s and yet the love between the pair of them gets stronger every day.
We put on a surprise lunch – with silver themed decorations – at my stepdad’s care home at the weekend to celebrate their silver wedding anniversary.
Today, mum placed a brand new wedding ring on her husband’s finger and said it took her back to their special day 25 years ago.
Just reminds me once again how important marrying the right person is. For some, sitting together holding hands is all they are left with so it’s vital we pick the person we’re content doing this with. Mr Robertson and I love spending time together doing nothing and we know how important that will be in years to come.
This time next week, my good friend Charlie Smith from Truly I Do (http://trulyido.weebly.com) will have tied the knot once again to husband of nine years, Dan. They will have seen all their plans come together and declared their never-ending love in front of their family and friends – including myself and Mr Robertson.

Bride Lucy Smith is down to single figures with just nine months to go until she says I Do to Imran and becomes Mrs Shah. Planning has quietened down slightly for the couple, but time is flying and the big day fast approaching. Mind “the gap”…
Handing over the blog to Lucy…
I can’t believe how fast this year is going! How on earth is it August already?
Wedding planning is not really happening at the moment. We have organised and booked all the big things and until I take my bridesmaids shopping in October, there isn’t much more I can do. I’ve heard other brides talk about the “gap” before. Once all the big stuff is organised, there is a gap until anything else needs to be done. From what my friends have said, you should use this gap wisely! » Read more
Torn between the desire for a beach wedding and the want to have all of your family and friends with you? I have found the solution! The Gallivant (www.the gallivant.co.uk) sits across the road from the stunning sand dunes of Camber Sands beach in East Sussex. Inspired by the coastal retreats of California, The Gallivant not only has the seaside location, but is also the most incredible wedding venue you could wish for.
My mum and I went for a visit and were blown away by what we found. In the weeks leading up to our trip, my mum had been swooning over images online of the venue, with its New England decor and restful haven feel. The reality lived up to expectations and we enjoyed the most relaxing 24-hour “holiday”. » Read more
It’s now less than a year until Lucy Smith marries her best friend Imran and becomes the new Mrs Shah. Time to check in and see how the bride-to-be is getting on with the planning with just 11 months to go.
The look of a wedding can be made or broken on the success, quality and style of the finishing touches. But, how are you supposed to know the rights and wrongs when it’s no doubt the biggest event you’ve ever planned yourself?
